This year, our keynote speaker is renowned scholar and attorney H.T. Smith. Florida Super Lawyers magazine selected Attorney Smith for the 3rd year in a row as a "Super Lawyer". Attorney Smith has over 30 years of experience as one of Florida 's leading trial lawyers. Upon graduation from law school, he became the first African-American Assistant Public Defender and then the first African-American Assistant County Attorney in Miami. Since 1977, he has been in private practice, specializing in personal injury, wrongful death and criminal defense. Professor Smith has served the profession extensively throughout his career; he has been a member or chair of the National Bar Association, the Florida Constitution Revision Commission, the Judicial Nominating Commission for the Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida, the Florida Sentencing Guidelines Commission, the Black Lawyers' Association of Dade County, the NAACP Executive Committee, Miami-Dade Branch, and the Board of Directors for Legal Services of Greater Miami. He is the recipient of countless professional honors and awards, including the Leadership and Service Award, Virgil Hawkins Florida Chapter of the National Bar Association, the Community Service Award, Metro Miami Action Plan Trust (2002), and Chairman's Award, Eleventh Circuit Judicial Nominating Commission. He has also been listed in Best Lawyers in America and Leading American Attorneys. Attorney Smith is an Adjunct Professor of Law at FIU College of Law and heads up its Trial Advocacy Program.

FAMU College of Law Accreditation Celebration Golf Tournament and Gala scheduled on February 19 & 20, 2010

 
The Golf Tournament and Gala will acknowledge and celebrate FAMU College of Law receiving full accreditation from the American Bar Association on July 30, 2009.  These events will raise vital dollars for scholarships and other key priorities at the College of Law.  In addition, funds raised will be used to support the establishment of the Joseph W. Hatchett Endowed Professorship at the FAMU College of Law. Judge Joseph W. Hatchett currently serves as chair of Akerman Senterfitt's Appellate Practice Group and the firm's Diversity Committee. Immediately prior to joining Akerman Senterfitt in 1999, he served as Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit (Florida, Georgia and Alabama). Prior to congressional creation of the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, President Jimmy Carter appointed Judge Hatchett to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.

2010 Women and Minority Fellowship Application Available
The Forum's Women and Minority Fellowship is intended to serve two purposes: to make the benefits of Forum membership available to women and minority construction lawyers who would like to sample Forum membership on a "risk-free" basis, and to utilize the marketing of the Fellowship as a means of introducing the Forum to construction lawyers who are members of women's and minority lawyer's bar associations and are unaware of the Forum's existence. Currently, three (3) three-year Fellowships are awarded by the Forum each spring. Fellows receive the following benefits:
-The Forum waives all registration fees for all Forum programs (Fall,
Winter, Spring);
-The Forum reimburses the Fellows reasonable travel and accommodation
expenses to attend the Forum Annual Meeting program held each spring
(not to exceed $1,000 annually);
-The Forum waives all Forum dues; and
-The Forum pays the Fellows' ABA dues in the following amounts: 100% in
Year 1, 66% in Year 2, 33% in Year 3.

VACANCIES ON EACH OF THE 26 JUDICIAL NOMINATING COMMISSIONS

Beginning on December 1, The Florida Bar will begin accepting applications for two lawyer vacancies on each of the 26 Judicial Nominating Commissions (JNCs). The Bar must nominate three lawyers for each vacancy, for a total of six nominees for each JNC.

Each appointee serves a four-year term commencing July 1, 2010. All applicants must be engaged in the practice of law and a resident of the territorial jurisdiction of the respective JNC to which they are applying. Applications can be found on The Florida Bar's website beginning December 1 and must be filed with the Executive Director's Office no later than 5:30 p.m. on February 26, 2010.

The Florida Bar's Board of Governors is committed to seeking the most diverse pool of applicants possible. The membership on a JNC should be reflective of Florida's diversity in all forms, as well as from different geographical areas within the territory covered by the respective JNC.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY AVAILABLE

The 2010 We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution Competition is coming to the University of Central Florida Rosen College of Hospitality Management in Orlando, Florida on January 8, 2010. We would like to invite you to participate in this year's We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution simulated congressional hearings. We the People is a constitutional studies program that consists of a multi-unit instructional curriculum on the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights and a culminating mock congressional hearing exercise where students apply their constitutional knowledge to contemporary issues.

We are especially in need of judges.  The competition will be from 8:00am to 4:00pm with a break for lunch. Breakfast and lunch will be provided to all judges.

ABA LEGAL OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIP
